Abstract

WhatsApp is the most popular application on the ground, In addition to having a chat feature that allows us to interact with others through a private network, WhatsApp also provides group conversation feature. WhatsApp Group currently has a lot of developing among students. The use of the WhatsApp group as a communication medium among students raises the motive associated with students why they choose to use the WhatsApp group as their communication medium. This study aims to find out how the motive of the use of WhatsApp group on students of Faculty of Communication Sciences Islamic University of Riau. This research uses phenomenology theory. This research method is qualitative research method with phenomenology approach. In this research using purposive technique. Informants in this research are 10 students of Faculty of Communication Sciences, Islamic University of Riau that is group admins, class leaders, active members and inactive members. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the motive of using the WhatsApp group consists of past motives (because the motif) is WhatsApp group has a simple look, like having an interesting feature. And thrifty as well as due to environmental influences such as class members are more active using WhatsApp applications. and the motive of the future (for motive) in the form of information, Discussion, where we can discuss online without having to meet by all members of the class, and to get along with each other where by conversation relationship maintained so as to build the familiarity of each class member.
