Abstract

Thematic Progression concern about the way that the texts develop the ideas their present. The purpose of this research is to analyzed of thematic porogression. The focus of this research was only three patterns on thematic progressions multiple theme patterns, zig zag theme pattern, and comstant theme pattern, this research analized how the third semester students at English Departement of FKIP UIR organize their idea in their essay writing from thematic progression. Point of view of this research was qualitative research. There were five class in islamic University of Riau, and the writer choosed the students as the participant randomly of two class C and D. The member of them are 10 student from individual classes. This research describe that the thematic progression pattern that is often use by students in developing a text in English writing is constant theme pattern, zig zag theme pattern and multiple theme pattern is rarely use by the students. The number of coherence sentence in a essay writing can be seen in 16 students who used the split theme pattern, 3 student who used constant theme pattern, and 1 students who used zig zag theme pattern.
