Abstract

Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non verbal symbol in a variety of contents. This research was aimed to analyze the factor of self-confidence in speaking skill of the second semester students of English department of Islamic University of Riau. Self-confidence in speaking skill is one of the students’ weakness in learning English at English study program. There are some factors that affect students’ self-confidence, but the researcher only focus in personality, self-esteem and gender. The descriptive qualitative method was utilized in this research. The number of English students participant were 31 students from 38 students from C class, they were the English students in second semester in English Study Program of Islamic University of Riau. The instruments of this research are questionnaire and interview . The questionnaire containing 15 items was created by McCroskey (1997) and Rosenberg (1965). And for interview, the researcher has 2 questions and will be answered by 5 randomly selected students. Based on the result of this research, the majority of the English Study Program students at Islamic University of Riau experienced lack of selfconfidence in the class room. It was proved by the number percentage from the questionnaire the personality accounted for 61,30%, self-esteem at 70%, and gender for man 83,33% and for woman 88%. From the interview, the students like to get involved in group discussion, because they afraid give speech in front of the class. Some of the students feel nervous and forget facts that they really know while giving a speech because of lack self-confidence.
