Abstract

This study was aimed out to find out and analyze the grammatical errors in writing narrative text. The types of error were classified based on Dulay’s theory. Besides, the purpose of this study is to find out their frequency of occurrence and to find out the sources of errors which students made in writing narrative text. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. Furthermore, the subject of this study was Tenth Grade students of SMA Islam As-Shofa Pekanbaru from Class 10 MIA 1 which consisted of 24 students. The data were collected through observation and writing test. The test used four topics such as Toba Lake, Malin Kundang, Tangkuban Perahu, and Surabaya. The result of the error analysis process showed that students committed error into four types: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. There was a total of 319 errors. From the frequency of each error types, misformation was the most frequently produced by the students. It took 49.53% of the total errors. Moreover, 35.42% of errors fell into omission and 13.17% errors occurred in addition. For misordering, it only took 1.88%. To sum up, it showed that students still feel difficult to understand the grammatical aspect that caused them to make errors in their writing.
