Abstract

The objective of the research is to identify and analyse the types of grammatical errors were done by the students third semester at Islamic University of Riau. In this research, the researcher used Likewise’s theory of errors in Sermsook et al (2016). The researcher wants to know what types of grammatical errors were done by the students third semester in writing. The participant of this research is students third semester at Islamic University of Riau, it divided into six classes from A-F. The researcher chose B class as sample consisted 20 students. In this research, the researcher used purposive sampling to obtain the sample. The method used in this research was a case study included as descriptive qualitative research. The result of the research showed that there were 161 errors made by the students. They were subject-verb agreement with total of error 28 errors, tenses with total of error 12 errors, capitalization with total of error 13 errors, punctuation with total of error 9 errors, article with total of error 22 errors, word choice with total of error 19 errors, word order with total of error 8 errors and preposition with total of error 50 errors.
