Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of farmers, the performance of lowland rice farming, the structure of household income and expenditure, as well as the factors influencing the income and expenditure of rice farmer households in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Specifically, the objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the characteristics of lowland rice farmers; (2) to analyze costs, production, prices, revenue, and household income of rice farmers; (3) to analyze the structure of household income and expenditure; and (4) to analyze the factors influencing the income and expenditure of rice farmer households in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. This study employed a survey method with a random sampling technique. The sample consisted of 43 rice farmers operating lowland rice farming across 4 villages in Keritang District, representing 10% of the total population of rice farmers. The results showed that the average age of farmers was 49 years, with an average education level of 8 years (equivalent to junior high school), farming experience of 19 years, and an average household size of 4 members. The farming analysis indicated that the total production cost was IDR 7,677,639 per planting season, with a production level of 2,784 kg. Gross revenue amounted to IDR 19,207,465, while net income reached IDR 11,529,826 per planting season. The R/C Ratio of 2.50 indicates that lowland rice farming is efficient and profitable. The structure of household income is derived from both farm and non-farm sectors. Farm income includes rice, oil palm, coconut, and areca nut, while non-farm income comes from employment as workers and agricultural laborers. The average total household income was IDR 62,209,121 per year. Meanwhile, household expenditure consisted of food expenditure amounting to IDR 27,401,785 per year and non-food expenditure of IDR 17,812,859 per year. The factors that significantly influence household expenditure are household income and the number of family members.
