Abstract

The wood preparation system constitutes the preliminary phase of the pulp and paper production process and has a decisive influence on both the quality and volume of wood chips produced. Disruptions occurring at this stage, including machinery malfunction and unexpected production stoppages, may lead to decreased operational efficiency and interfere with the stability of the pulping process. In response to these challenges, this research is conducted to examine various failure patterns with in the primary components of the wood preparation system, assess the magnitude of associated risks, and analyze their impact on chip production losses. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive research design through the application of the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis method. Data collection is carried out by means of direct field observation, structured interviews with operators and maintenance staff, and the examination of daily production data. Each identified failure mode is evaluated based on its severity, likelihood of occurrence, and detectability to establish risk priority levels. The findings reveal that several system components exhibit relatively high risk values, which play a substantial role in causing production downtime and reducing chip output. Consequently, the implementation of Failure Mode and Effect Analysis is proven to be effective in supporting companies in determining maintenance priorities and enhancing the reliability of the production system, while further studies are encouraged to integrate this approach with real-time condition monitoring technologies to improve the accuracy of failure detection.
