Abstract

The increasing problem of plastic waste requires effective technological solutions in waste processing and recycling, one of which is the use of plastic waste shredding machines. This study aims to analyze the effect of blade spacing variations on the shredding performance of a plastic waste shredder in terms of production capacity, shape, and size of the shredded material. An experimental method was employed using a shredding machine driven by a 3 HP electric motor operating at 2800 rpm and equipped with six blades with a blade angle of 20°. The blade spacing variations tested were 4 cm, 5 cm, and 6 cm, using PP and PET plastic waste with a mass of 1 kg for each test. The results show that blade spacing significantly affects the performance of the shredding machine, where a 4 cm blade spacing produced the highest shredding capacity, namely 33 kg/h for PP plastic and 35 kg/h for PET plastic, with smaller and more uniform shredded sizes. Increasing the blade spacing to 5 cm and 6 cm resulted in lower shredding capacity and coarser shredded products. Therefore, it can be concluded that smaller blade spacing leads to a more effective and efficient plastic waste shredding process.
