Abstract
Drilling cement is a crucial component in oil and gas drilling operations that serves to bond the casing to the formation and prevent fluid migration between zones. One important parameter in cementing success is the bond strength between the cement and the casing, which is expressed as the shear bond strength value. This study aims to test and analyze the effect of adding water hyacinth-based carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) biopolymer on the shear bond strength of G-class drilling cement. The research method used is the experimental method. CMC was synthesized from water hyacinth through an alkalization and carboxymethylation process, then characterized to determine its quality. Next, CMC was added to the cement slurry with varying concentrations of 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% BWOC. Shear bond strength testing was conducted after the curing process at a temperature of 140 °F in accordance with drilling cement testing standards. The test results were analyzed to evaluate the effect of varying CMC concentrations on the shear bond strength of cement. The results showed that the addition of water hyacinth CMC had a significant effect on the shear bond strength of drilling cement. The shear bond strength value increases with increasing CMC concentration until it reaches an optimum value at a concentration of 0.2%, which indicates an improvement in the quality of the rheology cement than other concentration. However, at a higher CMC concentration, namely 0.3%, there is a decrease in the shear bond strength value due to the effect of over-retardation and disruption of the cement hydration process.
