Abstract

Drilling is the primary operation in the oil and gas industry, aimed at creating access to subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs. Operating under high-pressure and temperature conditions, the Blowout Preventer (BOP) plays a critical role in preventing blowouts, but its use impacts the rubber packing element. Repeated usage and operational pressures reduce the rubber's material elasticity. Degradation tests reveal the BOP's closure response time. Additionally, system reliability is assessed using Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and Availability parameters, along with the Arrhenius model to predict the remaining service life of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) material. Testing on Rig ARJ#01 showed a gradual performance decline, with the Annular Preventer closure time increasing from 23 seconds in April 2025 to 27 seconds in October 2025. Although still compliant with API RP 53 standards (maximum 30 seconds), this upward trend indicates significant material degradation. Based on Arrhenius model calculations at an operational temperature of 75°C, the rubber material is projected to degrade by 20% within 9 months. This study concludes that periodic monitoring of closure times is highly effective for scheduling timely component replacements.
