Abstract

he Upah-upah tradition is an activity of giving awards in the form of a ceremony to someone who has successfully overcome the problems experienced in his life, with the aim of restoring and encouraging the person's spirit to face life in the future. The importance of this research for researchers and readers is to obtain a clearer picture of one of the cultures in the Melayu Tengah Village, Tanah Putih District, Tanjung Melawan Regency, Rokan Hilir Regency, the Upah-upah tradition. In this study, a qualitative research method is used that is descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis is a research method that aims to use systematically and accurately regarding certain factors and characteristics contained in the research object. The work steps to describe an object, phenomenon, or social setting are manifested in a narrative writing. Therefore, what happened in the Melayu Tengah Village, Tanah Putih District, Tanjung Melawan Regency regarding customs is not codified/written in customary law but is carried out in the form of customs and is not subject to sanctions for those who do not do it/this is what the researcher assesses as a form of custom or habit.
