Abstract
This study aims to examine the description of homesickness among out-of-town students at Universitas Islam Riau. Homesickness is a psychological condition characterized by longing for home and family, difficulties in adapting to a new environment, and the emergence of negative emotions that can affect students’ well-being. This research used a descriptive quantitative method with a sample of 389 out-of-town students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was the Utrecht Homesickness Scale (UHS), consisting of 16 items after a trial test, and data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics via SPSS. The results showed that 130 students (33.33%) were in the moderate category, 96 students (24.62%) in the high category, and 21 students (5.38%) in the very high category. Meanwhile, students in the low category were 111 (28.46%) and in the very low category 32 (8.21%). Difference analysis revealed significant variations in homesickness levels based on students’ regions of origin, and significant differences were also found across faculties, with students from the Faculty of Islamic Studies tending to have higher levels of homesickness, while students from the Faculty of Psychology showed the lowest levels. Overall, this study confirms that homesickness is a common phenomenon experienced by out-of-town students, particularly related to longing for home and adaptation challenges.
