Abstract

This study is motivated by the persistence of juvenile delinquent behavior in the school environment which requires proper handling through effective communication between the school and students. This study aims to identify the communication patterns applied by SMP Negeri 3 Singingi Hilir in overcoming juvenile delinquency and the factors influencing communication effectiveness. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with an ethnographic approach involving eight informants consisting of the principal, guidance and counseling teacher, duty teachers or homeroom teachers, and students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation in the form of student violation records and counseling archives, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The results show that three communication patterns are applied, namely circular communication, circle communication, and chain communication patterns, where circular communication is implemented in socialization and counseling activities, circle communication is used in student case conferences and case handling, and chain communication is applied in classical classroom guidance activities which tend to be one-way. Factors influencing communication effectiveness include language use, message delivery methods, and behavioral triggers among students. The conclusion indicates that the application of varied communication patterns according to activity types can help schools address juvenile delinquency; however, its effectiveness still needs to be improved through strengthening two-way communication, increasing student involvement, and enhancing cooperation with parents.
