Abstract

This study aims to find out and understand the form of symbolic interaction in the tradition of Tepuk Flour Tawar at the Malay traditional circumcision event in Pangkalan Kerinci District. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection methods in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to gain a deep understanding of the symbolic meaning contained in the traditional procession. The research informants consisted of traditional leaders, Mak Indung, and people who were directly involved in the implementation of the Tepuk Flour Tawar tradition. Data analysis was carried out using George Herbert Mead's theory of symbolic interaction which focuses on three main concepts, namely mind, self, and society. The results of the study show that in the aspect of mind, the Malay community interprets the symbols in the Plain Flour Tap, such as turmeric rice, white rice, fragrant water, potpourri, as a medium of prayer, protection, purity, and hope for goodness for circumcised children. This meaning is formed through a process of mutual understanding that is inherited from generation to generation. In the aspect of self, the tradition of Tepuk Flour Tawar plays a role in shaping individual self-awareness and identity as part of Malay society. Circumcised children, families, traditional leaders, and Mak Indung carry out their respective roles which are accompanied by feelings of pride, emotion, and moral responsibility. Meanwhile, in the aspect of society, this tradition has become a social practice that strengthens togetherness, maintains traditional values and Islamic teachings, and maintains Malay cultural identity amid the influence of modernization. Overall, the tradition of Tepuk Flour Tawar not only functions as a traditional ritual, but also as a means of inheriting cultural, moral, and spiritual values in the life of the Malay community.
