Abstract
This research investigates the effect of using the role-play method on the speaking skills of ninth-grade students at SMP 4 Siak Hulu. Recognizing that many students face challenges in speaking English due to lack of confidence, limited vocabulary, and fear of making mistakes, this study applies role play as an interactive teaching strategy aimed at improving students’ oral communication. The research employs a quantitative quasi-experimental design involving a pre-test and post-test for both control and experimental groups. The experimental group received speaking instruction through role-play activities, while the control group was taught using traditional methods. The results of the study reveal a significant improvement in the speaking performance of the experimental group compared to the control group. Statistical analysis using an independent sample t-test indicated that the post-test mean score of the experimental class (72.5) was higher than that of the control class (66.5), with a gain score difference of 3.0 points. The findings support the hypothesis that the role-play method has a significant positive effect on students’ speaking skills. Role play was found to enhance pronunciation, intonation, fluency, and accuracy, while also reducing students’ anxiety and increasing their engagement in classroom activities.
