Abstract
Oil palm farming is an activity that produces fresh fruit bunches (FFB) as the main source of income for the people in the area. However, the number of active oil palm farmers fluctuates due to various factors, both internal and external. This study aims to analyze: 1) Characteristics of farmers and profiles of oil palm farming; 2) Characteristics of innovation (oil palm harvesting machines); 3) Factors that significantly influence farmers' decisions to adopt oil palm farming; 4) Efforts to increase the adoption of oil palm farming. This study used a survey method conducted for 6 months, located in Bukit Kapur sub-district, Dumai City. Respondents were taken using a quota sample of 70 respondents divided into 2 categories: 23 respondents continued to adopt oil palm harvesting tools and 47 respondents stopped adopting oil palm harvesting tools. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study indicate that: 1) The majority of farmers who continue to adopt oil palm harvesting tools are 25-30 years old with 11-20 years of farming experience and have 4-5 family members. The area of land cultivated by farmers is 1.6-2.0 ha, earning an income of 1-3 million rupiah/MT with a FFB productivity of 1,150 tons/ha. Meanwhile, the majority of farmers who stopped adopting oil palm harvesting tools are 51-60 years old with 1120 years of farming experience and have 2-3 family members. Farmers who stopped adopting oil palm harvesting tools have a land area of 2.7-3.2 ha, with an income cost of 4-6 million rupiah/MT with a productivity of 1,150 tons/ha. 2) Farmers who continued to adopt farming stated that oil palm farming is less profitable from an economic perspective and does not suit local customs, while farmers who stopped adopting stated that oil palm farming is profitable from an economic perspective and suits local customs. 3) Factors that significantly influence farmers' decisions to adopt oil palm include the number of family members, farming experience, and suitability, which are farmer characteristics (number of family members, farming experience, and suitability of tools to the farmer's work speed and physical condition). The more family members, the more farming experience and tools that suit the farmer's physical condition, the more the harvesting tools will be adopted by farmers. 4) To increase the adoption of innovation, it is hoped that harvesting tools will be designed according to the performance and physical conditions of farmers.
