Abstract

This study was motivated by the relatively low level of students’ understanding in Islamic Education at Junior High School 1 Siak Hulu. Students’ understanding was considered important because it enabled them to transfer knowledge to new situations and to solve problems they encountered using their knowledge. The research problems addressed in this study were: (1) the level of implementation of question-and-answer method in Islamic Education, (2) the level of students’ understanding in Islamic Education, and (3) the effect of question-and-answer method on students’ understanding in Islamic Education. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of implementation of question-and-answer method in Islamic Education, the level of students’ understanding in Islamic Education, and the effect of question-and-answer method on students’ understanding at Junior High School 1 Siak Hulu. This study employed a quantitative correlational research design. The population consisted of seventh-grade students. The sampling technique used was quota sampling, in which the selected samples met certain criteria. The sample consisted of 115 Muslim students. Data were collected through questionnaires and documentation. The results showed that the level of implementation of question-and-answer method in Islamic Education reached 90.13%, while the level of students’ understanding of the subject was 45.44%. The hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating that the question-and-answer method significantly influenced students’ understanding in Islamic Education with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). The magnitude of the effect of the question-and-answer method on students’ understanding was 0.747, which was categorized as high. The findings also indicated that the use of the question-and-answer method in the learning process could improve students’ understanding by 35.8%. Therefore, it could be concluded that the question-and-answer method had a significant effect on students’ understanding in Islamic Education at Junior High School 1 Siak Hulu.
