Abstract
The upah-upah tradition is a cultural heritage of the Malay community in Rokan Hilir Regency that functions as a means of spiritual reinforcement and the restoration of inner vitality (tondi). This ritual is not only understood as a customary practice but also as a form of communication rich in symbols and cultural meanings. This study aims to analyze symbolic interaction in the upahupah ritual process, identify the symbolic meanings of the materials used, and explain the role of the ritual within the context of traditional healing practices in the Rokan Hilir community. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through field observations, documentation, and indepth interviews with informants consisting of representatives from the Rokan Hilir Malay Customary Institution (LAM), community leaders, and individuals directly involved in the ritual process. Data analysis was conducted using the perspective of symbolic interaction to understand how meanings are constructed and exchanged within the ritual. The findings show that symbolic interaction in the upah-upah ritual is reflected through the use of symbols such as food offerings, traditional pantun, and ritual actions that carry specific meanings. These symbols function not only as elements of the ceremony but also as media for conveying prayers, hopes, and cultural values passed down through generations. The interaction between the ritual performers and the recipients demonstrates a process of meaning exchange that strengthens social relationships and reinforces community beliefs in the tradition. Overall, the upah-upah ritual can be understood as a form of symbolic communication that plays an important role in maintaining physical and spiritual balance, strengthening social bonds, and preserving the cultural values of the Malay community in Rokan Hilir.
