Abstract

The Korean drama Twinkling Watermelon tells the story of the life of a child who has deaf parents and siblings, namely those who cannot hear or speak. They communicate using sign language in the life they live, they have two children, one is normal and one is deaf, this normally child always helps his family in the situations they face. In this research, the aim is to understand the reception part with the audience in determining the three meanings of the audience's point of view using Stuart Hall's reception analysis technique, that is coding-decoding. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with data sources from interviews and documentation. The results of this research show that the communication story of a deaf family clearly explains that even though they have shortcomings, they communicate using sign language and the illustrations can determine how the audience's various perceptions interpret the drama. There are 3 ways of viewing the audience based on Stuart Hall's theory, research conducted with 6 informants obtained a perspective but still had the same intention in understanding. There are informants in the Dominant-Hegemonic Reading position, informants in the Negotiated Reading position, and informants in the Oppositional Reading position in receiving messages regarding deaf family communication in the drama series Twinkling Watermelon. It can be explained that by analyzing the audience recipients, many of them are in the dominant-hagemonic reading position.
