Abstract

Interpersonal communication between parents and children significantly influences the lives of children living away from home, including juvenile delinquency. Therefore, this study aims to determine the role of interpersonal communication between parents and students living away from home in Pekanbaru City in preventing juvenile delinquency. The background of this study consists of the phenomenon of students living away from home and experiencing changes in communication with their parents, which can impact adolescent behavior, including a tendency toward delinquency. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach with purposive sampling, involving five students living away from home and five parents as informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that active and positive interpersonal communication between parents and children, despite distance, provides indirect supervision, emotional support, and the formation of values and norms, which are powerful influences in preventing deviant behavior in adolescents. Consistent communication through digital media such as telephone, instant messaging, and video calls plays a crucial role in maintaining emotional bonds and moral supervision. Therefore, it can be concluded that interpersonal communication between parents and students living away from home is crucial in shaping positive adolescent behavior and preventing delinquency in adolescents.
