Abstract

Self efficacy defined as an individual's belief in their own abilities, is an important factor in successful communication. However, many students, especially those from outside their home region, still experience communication apprehension when speaking in public. This study aims to determine the relationship between self efficacy and communication apprehension among students aboard region at the Islamic University of Riau. This study is based on the fact that many students experience anxiety when speaking in public, especially students from other regions who must adapt to a new environment. This study uses a quantitative approach with data collection techniques through self efficacy and communication apprehension questionnaires that have been tested for validity and reliability. The sample in this study consisted of 97 engineering students at the Islamic University of Riau. The results of data analysis showed a significant negative relationship between self efficacy and communication apprehension (r = -0,668) with a significance of p <0.05. This means that the higher the self efficacy of students, the lower their level of communication apprehension, and vice versa. This study shows the importance of developing self efficacy in an effort to reduce the level of communication apprehension among students aboard.
