Abstract

xOut-of-town students face various challenges beyond their control. One of the main challenges they encounter is managing their finances. These students must adapt to a new environment, handle more complex financial management, and deal with social pressure from peers. Compared to students who do not live away from home, out-of-town students often experience limitations in buying clothes or other desired items.Consumptive behavior is the tendency of individuals to purchase or consume goods and services excessively without rational consideration, often prioritizing wants over needs. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between self-control and consumptive behavior among out-of-town students in the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Islam Riau.The research subjects consisted of 110 out-of-town students selected using a simple random sampling technique. This study employed a quantitative correlational approach. The consumptive behavior scale and the self-control scale were adapted from S.R Wulandari (2023).Data analysis using the Pearson Product Moment correlation showed a correlation value of r = -0.238 with a significance level of p = 0.012 (p < 0.05). These results indicate a significant negative relationship between self-control and consumptive behavior. This means that the higher the self-control possessed by out-of-town students, the lower their consumptive behavior, and vice versa
