Abstract
This study was designed to find out the effect of using podcast Spotify on students’ listening skill at ninth grade of SMP Kartika 1-5 Pekanbaru. The background of this study was based on students’ difficulties in comprehending English audio materials, limited vocabulary, and the lack of learning media that provide authentic exposure. This study employed a true experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group taught by using podcast Spotify and a control group taught using conventional listening materials. Each group consisted of 15 students’. A listening test was given before and after the treatment to measure students’ improvement. The result showed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 59.8 in pre-test to 80.4 in post-test. The result of the paired sample t-test indicated a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that the use podcast Spotify has a significant positive effect on students’ listening skill at the ninth grade of SMP Kartika 1-5 Pekanbaru.
