Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of limited vocabulary on students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Siak Hulu. This research is motivated by students’ difficulties in understanding English texts due to insufficient vocabulary knowledge, which leads to low comprehension ability, difficulty interpreting information, and declining interest in reading. This study applied a quantitative method with a quasi eksperimental design. The samples consisted of two clasess : VIII.5 as the experimental class and VIII.6 as the control class, with a total of 71 students. The instrument used was a multiple choice reading test based on recount texts administered in the form of pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using SPSS 26, including normality test, homogeneity test, and paired sample t-test. The findings showed a significance value obtained from t-test was 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Thus, it canbe concluded that limited vocabulary significantly affects students’ reading comprehension. Therrefore, vocabulary development should be emphasized in English learning toi support students’ reading comprehension effectively.
