Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial time for individuals, marked by significant emotional changes, both in adapting to the family environment, society, and their emotions. Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in adolescent success. However, the high rate of juvenile delinquency indicates that the development of adolescent emotional intelligence is still far from optimal. One factor influencing adolescent emotional intelligence is parental parenting styles. This study aims to determine the relationship between democratic parenting styles and emotional intelligence in adolescents in Simpang Baru Village. The population in this study was 975 adolescents aged 15-19 in Simpang Baru Village, with a sample size of 284. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. The instruments used included a 21-item democratic parenting scale based on Baumrind's (1996) theory and a 31item emotional intelligence scale based on Salovey and Mayer's (1990) theory. Data analysis used the Spearman's Rho test using SPSS 26. The results showed a significant negative relationship between democratic parenting and emotional intelligence, with a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.638 and a significance level of 0.000 <0.05. This demonstrates a significant negative relationship between democratic parenting and emotional intelligence in adolescents.
