Abstract

Urban sprawl is a phenomenon of the expansion of built-up areas that extend beyond administrative boundaries without adequate spatial planning. This phenomenon is a consequence of rapid urbanization as well as the development of infrastructure and transportation in peri-urban areas. Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency, is one of the regions experiencing strong urban sprawl pressure due to its strategic location along the Trans-Sumatra Highway. This study aims to identify the characteristics of urban sprawl and analyze its impacts on the social and economic conditions of the local community. This research employed a mixed methods approach by combining spatial, quantitative, and qualitative analyses. Spatial analysis was carried out through satellite imagery interpretation from 2019–2024 to observe settlement patterns, land-use changes, and building density. Quantitative analysis was conducted using a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents, with instrument validity and reliability tested using SPSS. Meanwhile, qualitative analysis was obtained through in-depth interviews with community leaders and field observations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The results show that urban sprawl in Pinggir District develops in a linear pattern along major transportation routes and sporadically around plantation villages. The conversion of agricultural land into settlements, trade, and industry has reduced productive space. Socially, this has led to changes in community structure, declining social interaction, and potential conflicts due to population heterogeneity. Economically, urban sprawl has shifted livelihoods from the agricultural sector to informal and service sectors, increased income for some groups, but also widened inequality and raised living costs. Therefore, urban sprawl in Pinggir District can be understood as a dual phenomenon that presents both opportunities and challenges for sustainable regional development.
