Abstract

In the welding process, variations in joint groove (weld groove) and the determination of welding parameters are important factors in defining the mechanical properties and microstructure of the joint. The objective of this research is to determine the comparison of mechanical strength properties for each type of joint and the microstructure changes in Aluminum 6061 material after welding using GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) with different groove variations. The research method used is experimental research, based on the treatment given by the researcher, which is welding using GTAW on Aluminum 6061.The results of the study show that the type of weld groove used affects the quality of the welded joint. GTAW welding with the X-groove yielded the maximum results, with an average yield strength of 149.7 MPa, tensile strength of 178.4 MPa, and elongation (ductility) of 7.25%. In the bending test, the bending strength value obtained was 420.85 MPa for the I-groove and 412.3 MPa for the X-groove.Regarding the microstructure changes resulting from the Aluminum 6061 welded joint using GTAW, the base metal and the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) have different structures, but the I, V, and X grooves have nearly the same microstructure in each area. The conclusion that can be drawn from this research indicates that the Aluminum 6061 welded joint using GTAW with an X-groove produces better joint quality than the I-groove and V-groove.
