Abstract
Aluminum 6061 series is widely utilized in the offshore industry, including in the shipbuilding process, often involving TIG welding. A significant drawback of welding Aluminum 6061, however, is the potential for hot cracking. The welding process also introduces residual stresses in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), which can lead to deformation and changes in the material's mechanical properties and metallurgical structure.To restore the strength of the welded joint, a Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is necessary, specifically the Artificial Aging process. The objectives of this treatment are to soften the HAZ, increase the toughness of the weld area, eliminate residual stresses from welding, and enhance the material's mechanical properties, especially hardness and tensile strength.In this research, PWHT was conducted using varying aging temperatures of 140˚C, 180˚C, and 230˚C, each with a holding time of 4 hours. Prior to aging, the material underwent Solution Treatment at a temperature of 540˚C for 1 hour.The results indicate that aging successfully improves the yield strength, tensile strength, and bending strength of the material that were degraded by welding. The highest yield strength and highest tensile strength were exhibited by the material aged at 230˚C, measuring 235.35 MPa and 255.55 MPa, respectively. Similarly, the highest bending strength was also observed in the material aged at 230˚C, reaching 591.9 MPa. This is attributed to the aging process causing the growth of fine and dense precipitates which effectively hinder dislocation movement, thereby increasing the material's strength and hardness.
