Abstract
elding is widely used in construction, including in the marine industry. This study aims to examine the effect of root gap variations of 0 mm, 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm on the mechanical properties of SMAW welded joints in ST40 steel. Data collection was carried out by testing specimens using impact, bending, and microstructure. Based on the test results, a root gap of 0 mm had the lowest impact value of 0.366 J/mm 2 and bending strength of 12.3 Mpa, as evidenced by a microstructure that was more dominant in the ferrite phase structure. As the root gap increases to 3 mm, we can see that the impact value increases dramatically to 0.725 J/mm 2 and the bending strength to 44.9 Mpa, as evidenced by the microstructure test which shows a more dominant pearlite phase structure, so it can be concluded from this research that the larger the root gap used up to 3 mm, the stronger the welded joint will be.
