Abstract

Indonesia's oil production target for 2030 is set at 1 million barrels per day (BOPD). One environmentally friendly and economically efficient method is Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR), a technique that utilizes microorganisms and their metabolites, such as biosurfactants, biopolymers, organic acids, solvents, biogas, and enzymes. These techniques play a role in altering reservoir rock properties, reducing heavy oil viscosity, emulsifying oil, pressurizing the reservoir, and dissolving residual oil. This is believed to increase oil recovery. In this study, sucrose addition was tested to determine its effect on the effectiveness of Bacillus sp. in reducing oil viscosity. This study aimed to determine the optimal temperature and sucrose concentration for the effectiveness of Bacillus sp. in reducing heavy oil viscosity, as well as changes in pH and functional group characteristics. The bacterial concentration used was 15%, and the sucrose concentrations used were 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. This study consisted of three processes: heavy oil viscosity testing using a Redwood viscometer, pH testing, and FTIR testing. Incubation was carried out in a water bath for 72 hours at temperatures of 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C. The results showed that the sample experienced a 70.65% decrease in viscosity from the initial viscosity of 2.64 cP in Bacillus sp. A strain with the addition of 5% sucrose, with an optimum pH of 6.80 at 70°C. Therefore, this study demonstrates that sucrose additives influence the effectiveness of Bacillus sp. in reducing heavy oil viscosity as an alternative to MEOR.
