Abstract
The increasing energy demand and decreasing production of light oils encourage the utilization of heavy oils through MEOR. This study evaluated the ability of Bacillus cereus from oil palm and chili roots to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil at temperatures of 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C with varying NaCl concentrations. Both bacteria were able to reduce viscosity, with optimal results at 15% NaCl at 50°C, oil palm root bacteria from 6.04 cp to 3.34 cp and chili root bacteria to 3.03 cp. A concentration of 20% NaCl inhibited metabolism due to osmotic pressure, while 60°C decreased bacterial activity, although NaCl helped thermal stability. The pH value was at 6–7, associated with the production of acidic metabolites. Bacillus cereus from chili roots showed the best growth at 50°C with 15% NaCl in reducing the viscosity of heavy oil by 50%. FTIR showed changes in the O-H and C-H groups, indicating biosurfactant activity. Overall, Bacillus cereus with 15% NaCl was the most effective combination in reducing heavy oil viscosity through MEOR.
