Abstract

The decline in oil production due to reduced reservoir pressure and changes in rock characteristics necessitates the application of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. One promising EOR method is Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR), which utilizes microorganisms to increase oil recovery through the metabolic activity of bacteria that produce bio-products. This study aims to determine the effect of Bacillus Cereus bacterial concentration from oil palm and chili roots on the recovery factor produced. This study used the Spontaneous imbibition method at temperatures of 40°C and 50°C with variations in concentration of 5%, 10%, and 15%, as well as salinity of 6000 ppm using artificial core sandstone saturated with crude oil. The results show that an increase in bacterial concentration is directly proportional to an increase in the Recovery Factor, with a concentration of 15% Bacillus Cereus bacteria from chili roots producing the highest RF increase of 25.9% at a temperature of 50°C. Bacillus Cereus from chili shows superiority compared to Bacillus Cereus from palm oil, which is due to differences in strain and origin. FTIR testing showed the presence of functional groups characteristic of lipopeptide biosurfactants, such as -NH, which can play a role in reducing interfacial tension and increasing oil mobility.
