Abstract

Drilling is an activity to search for hydrocarbons such as gas and oil. Drilling mud is a very important factor in drilling operations. In drilling mud, physical properties such as density play a crucial role because they affect the mud's ability to control the formation pressure below the surface. With the correct density, the aim is to produce hydrostatic pressure sufficient to balance or slightly exceed the formation pressure, in order to prevent wild kicks or even blowouts. Controlling the formation pressure requires determining density and selecting additives to be used in the drilling mud. Some common additives used to increase density are barite, galena, calcium carbonate, salt solutions, and iron oxide (hematite Fe2O3). This final project research focuses on studying the potential of hematite as an additive to increase mud density because of the abundant iron sand resources in Indonesia. Hematite was synthesized from iron sand obtained from Sungai Beremas sub-district, Pasaman Barat district, West Sumatra using the calcination method. Test results showed that there is 80.5% Fe in the iron sand compound and the hematite Fe2O3 compound contains 81.5% Fe, which can affect the optimal density increase at concentrations of 20 grams, 40 grams, 60 grams, 80 grams, 100 grams, 130 grams, 150 grams, and 160 grams, with density values of 9.2 ppg, 9.5 ppg, 9.8 ppg, 10.1 ppg, 10.3 ppg, 10.6 ppg, 10.9 ppg, and 11.2 ppg respectively. Meanwhile, the barite additive at the same concentrations resulted in density values of 8.9 ppg, 9.1 ppg, 9.4 ppg, 9.7 ppg, 10.1 ppg, 10.4 ppg, 10.6 ppg, and 10.9 ppg. Similarly, rheology testing of drilling mud showed that barite mud had a lower rheology value, making it more stable as an additive, whereas hematite Fe2O3 produced higher rheology values at the same concentrations.
