Abstract

The research is based on the importance of optimising the mechanical and structural properties of cement to ensure the integrity of oil and gas wells. Fly ash and graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) were tested in this study because they have the potential to improve the mechanical properties and durability of Cement. The study aimed to analyse the effect of adding fly ash and graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) on compressive strength, shear bond strength and the microstructure of the drilling cement. The research was conducted experimentally in the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory at the University of Islam Riau. The GONs were synthesised using the Liquid Mechanical Exfoliation (LME) method and characterised using UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDS. A cement slurry was made using G class cement with 0.03% GONs and a fly ash variation of 5–15%. The tests included thickening time, compressive strength and shear bond strength at 140°F, as well as microstructure analysis using XRD and SEM-EDS. The results of the study showed that replacing 5% of the fly ash with a concentration of 0.03 GONs increased the compressive strength by 11.658 psi and the shear bond strength by 1018,5 psi. The addition of 5% fly ash caused the formation of a new mineral, quartz, which helped to nucleate the formation of the C–S–H phase. The microstructure of the cement shows a reduction in porosity and the disappearance of microcracks in the cement matrix. The synergy between fly ash and GONs has been proven to produce a denser microstructure, thereby enhancing mechanical strength and improving the integrity and durability of the drilling cement.
