Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of business actors in Maharatu Subdistrict toward Islamic banking, particularly in terms of their understanding of the basic principles of Islamic banking, the services provided, as well as the constraints and inhibiting factors affecting its development. The study was grounded in the important role of banking institutions in mobilizing and distributing public funds and in the fundamental differences between conventional and Islamic banking operations. Islamic banks operated based on Islamic principles by avoiding usury (riba), applying contract-based transactions and profit-sharing systems, and adhering to fatwas issued by the Sharia Supervisory Board, while conventional banks relied on interest-based systems. This research employed a field research design with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through indepth interviews with four business actors who had conducted transactions with Islamic banks. The data were analyzed descriptively to explore perceptions, advantages, constraints, and inhibiting factors related to the growth of Islamic banking within the community. The findings indicated that business actors held generally positive perceptions of Islamic banks. Islamic banks were perceived as operating in accordance with Islamic principles, implementing profit-sharing mechanisms, and offering advantages such as transparency, clarity of transactions, and compliance with Islamic values. However, several constraints were identified, including complex financing procedures, suboptimal digital services, limited human resources, and insufficient socialization and Islamic financial literacy. These factors were found to hinder the development of Islamic banking in Maharatu Subdistrict. The study concluded that although Islamic banks possessed significant potential, optimal development required improved public understanding, broader socialization efforts, and enhancements in digital services and branch network accessibility to increase public trust and participation in Islamic banking.
