Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the efforts of Islamic Studies teachers in fostering students' moral character and identify the obstacles encountered in the guidance process at SMPN 3 Batang Angkola. This study was motivated by various problems with students' moral character, such as low respect for teachers, saying impolite words, lack of academic responsibility, and low levels of disciplinary behavior. This was a descriptive qualitative study with the data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of the study were the Islamic Studies teachers and the Principal as key informants. The results of the study showed that the efforts of Islamic Studies teachers in fostering morals were carried out through three main strategies: Role Modeling (Uswah Hasanah), that the teachers implemented da'wah bil lisan and da'wah bil hal as models of disciplined and polite behavior; Habitualization of good behavior, which was implemented through the 5S culture (Senyum (Smile), Sapa (salutation), Salam (greeting), Sopan (polite), Santun (courteous)) and enforcement of order; and Islamic activities, such as congregational prayer, self-reflection, and commemoration of Islamic holidays. This study found several obstacles such as the influence of bad social environment, low student awareness of the importance of morals, and lack of family attention in fostering children's morals. Nevertheless, the guidance carried out by the Islamic Studies teachers had shown positive developments in students, especially in religious attitudes, discipline, and politeness. This study showed the importance of Islamic Studies (PAI) teachers and the need for cooperation among schools, families and communities in fostering students' morals.
