Abstract

The low reading interest among elementary school students remains a serious challenge in improving literacy in Indonesia, as reflected in PISA results showing reading skills below the international average. This condition is exacerbated by monotonous learning methods that fail to motivate students. This study aims to examine the effect of the Buddy Reading model on increasing the reading interest of third-grade students at SD Negeri 89 Pekanbaru. The research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest involving 34 students. The instrument used was a valid and reliable reading interest questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the Paired Samples t-test. The analysis showed that the mean pretest score of 44.41 increased to 51.18 in the posttest. The t-value of -11.300 and significance level (p < 0.001) indicate a significant difference before and after the treatment. Therefore, the Buddy Reading model has a significant positive effect on improving students’ reading interest. The novelty of this research lies in applying Buddy Reading as a collaborative literacy strategy that supports 21st-century competencies and aligns with the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.
