Abstract
Mathematical conceptual understanding is a crucial aspect of mathematics learning, yet it remains a challenge for fifth-grade students at UPT SDN 023 Pandau Jaya, particularly in the topic of fraction operations. This study aims to investigate the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students’ conceptual understanding in mathematics. The research employed a quantitative method with a posttest-only control group design, involving two classes: an experimental class that applied the PBL model and a control class that received conventional instruction. Data were collected through posttest assessments and analyzed using an independent t-test after meeting the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental group (15.13) was higher than that of the control group (12.00), with a significance value (p) of 0.013 < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that the implementation of the PBL model is effective in enhancing students' conceptual understanding in mathematics. PBL fosters active engagement, collaboration, and student reflection in learning, aligning with the principles of constructivist pedagogy. Therefore, the PBL model is recommended as an alternative instructional strategy for teaching mathematics in elementary schools.
