Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze factors affecting students’ speaking performance of English students at the third semester of English Language Education of FKIP Universitas Islam Riau. This study employs a quantitative research approach utilizing a questionnaire based on Tuan and Mai’s (2015) theory, which identifies six key factors influencing students’ speaking performance: Performance Condition, Affective Factors, Listening Ability, Topical Knowledge, Feedback During Activities, and Study Habits at Home. The data collected from the questionnaire are analyzed to examine how these factors contribute to students' ability to speak effectively in English. The findings reveal that various psychological, environmental, and linguistic elements contribute to students’ speaking challenges. Motivation, feedback, and topical knowledge emerged as strong positive influences, while issues like fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, and lack of confidence were found to hinder performance. Interview responses supported the quantitative findings, providing deeper insight into the learners’ personal experiences and speaking difficulties. This research concludes that improving speaking performance requires attention to both affective and linguistic aspects, and suggests that educators create a supportive, engaging, and well-structured environment to help students overcome their speaking barriers and enhance their communicative competence.
