Abstract

The rapid development of information and communication technology has had a significant impact across various sectors, particularly in education. One emerging technology with great potential to enhance the quality of learning is Augmented Reality (AR). AR enables the integration of real-world environments with virtual objects in real time, providing an interactive and engaging learning experience. This study aims to develop an AR-based learning media that presents information about various types of freshwater fish that are commonly consumed in Indonesia. The topic was chosen due to the importance of freshwater fish as a source of animal protein and biodiversity, while public knowledge— especially among students—about different species remains limited. The research method used is Research and Development (R&D) by adapting the ADDIE model, which includes five main phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. In the analysis phase, learner needs and relevant learning content were identified. During the design and development stages, AR markers, 3D fish models, and an Android-based application were created to present interactive educational content. The application features popular freshwater fish species such as catfish, tilapia, gourami, pangasius, and java barb, complete with 3D animations and descriptions of their habitat, physical characteristics, nutritional value, and farming techniques. The application was tested on elementary and junior high school students to evaluate its effectiveness in improving understanding and interest in the subject matter. Data collection methods included observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The evaluation results showed that this AR learning media significantly enhanced student engagement and comprehension compared to traditional media such as textbooks or static images. Students also found the application user-friendly, informative, and motivating for independent learning. In conclusion, the AR-based learning media developed in this study offers an innovative solution to support science education, particularly in the area of freshwater biodiversity. The use of AR technology has proven effective in strengthening students' conceptual understanding through visual and interactive approaches aligned with the characteristics of the digital-native generation.
