Abstract

Urban slums are one of the complex problems that are often found in urban areas, including in Tanjung Rhu Village. This area has the characteristics of slums which are characterized by high population density, low quality buildings, and limited basic facilities and infrastructure such as drainage, sanitation, and access to clean water. From a socio-economic aspect, the majority of the population has a low level of education and works in the informal sector with relatively minimal income. This limits the community's ability to improve the quality of their housing and environment. This study aims to identify the social and economic characteristics of the community and to determine the factors causing the high level of slums in Tanjung Rhu Village. The method used is Qualitative descriptive analysis through the distribution of questionnaires to 64 heads of families in RT 4 RW 5, RT 3 RW 7, and RT 4 RW 7. The results of the study showed that socio-economic factors such as the level of community education are dominated by high school/vocational high school graduates of 34.38%, the type of community work is mostly casual laborers 25%, with the majority of income in the underprivileged category (Rp400,000 - Rp1,000,000) as much as 51.56%, so it greatly affects the condition of the residential environment. In addition, limited facilities and infrastructure, unsuitable physical conditions of buildings, and low public awareness are the main causes of slums. Therefore, holistic and integrated handling efforts are needed through improving basic infrastructure, empowering the community's economy, and environmental education in order to improve the quality of settlements in a sustainable manner.
