Abstract

Developing countries, including Indonesia, still face various social and economic problems, with poverty as the main factor that triggers other problems, such as low education, poor health, and the growth of slums. In Pekanbaru City, rapid population growth and urbanization have worsened the condition of slums, especially in Rumbai District and Meranti Pandak Village, which are often flooded. Socio-economic factors, such as low income and education, contribute to the slums. Although the education participation rate has increased, the number of poor people in Pekanbaru continues to grow, indicating that the problems of poverty and slums are still challenges that need to be addressed immediately. The purpose of this study is to identify the socio-economic conditions of slum communities and to identify the socio-economic factors that most influence the quality of slum settlements. The method used to identify the socio-economic conditions of slum communities is qualitative analysis, and the method used to identify the socio-economic factors that most influence the quality of slum settlements is multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the results of the study, slums in Meranti Pandak Village still face social and economic problems, especially in terms of access to decent housing. The majority of the population has low education, although most of them have jobs. Regression analysis shows that social factors have a greater influence in improving the quality of settlements than economic factors. Therefore, efforts to improve slums need to focus more on social aspects and equal access to decent housing.
