Abstract

Welding is a local joining process of metals using heat energy. One of the main factors that affects the welding results is the electric current strength. This study aims to evaluate the effect of welding current variations on the corrosion rate of AISI 1010 steel material comprehensively. In this study, the selected welding currents were 120 Ampere, 160 Ampere and 200 Ampere. The highest weight loss and corrosion rate values were in specimen 1 with a welding current of 120 Ampere, namely 2.0715 mm/year. This is due to the influence of the welding current on the corrosion resistance which results in weight loss in the specimen which means the corrosion rate increases, resulting in the mechanical properties of AISI steel. The highest yield strength and tensile strength values were in specimen 3 with a welding current of 200 Ampere. This occurs because the high welding current will expand the HAZ area so that more dilution occurs, then resulting in deeper penetration which affects the yield strength. Observations of the microstructure of AISI 1010 steel with a welding current of 200 Ampere which are still not too dark, in accordance with the results of the corrosion rate calculation. The darker the color of AISI steel, the faster the corrosion rate of AISI 1010 steel, which is pitted, brittle, has low mechanical strength and the silver color changes from dark silver.
