Abstract

The growth of the palm oil industry in Indonesia significantly contributes to the national economy; however, abundant organic waste such as oil palm leaves is often underutilized and has the potential to pollute the environment. This study aims to design and develop a portable biodigester using oil palm leaves as the main feedstock to produce an alternative energy source in the form of biogas. The design process includes literature review, field surveys, equipment design, technical calculations, fabrication, and testing. The biodigester utilizes a 200-liter plastic drum with dimensions of 90 cm in height and 58 cm in diameter. The resulting biogas chamber has a volume of 0.078 m³. The piping system is designed to include an inlet waste pipe, an outlet waste pipe, and a gas outlet pipe. Calculation results show that the inlet waste pipe uses PVC pipe with a diameter of 112 mm (4 inches), a thickness of 0.0527 mm, and a length of 150 mm. The outlet waste pipe uses PVC pipe with a diameter of 79.8 mm (3 inches), a thickness of 0.03757 mm, and a length of 150 mm. The gas outlet pipe uses PVC pipe with a diameter of 11.28 mm (½ inch), a thickness of 0.0559 mm, and a length of 50 mm. All pipes follow PVC standards with a minimum thickness of 2 mm to withstand pressure, although biogas generally has low pressure. The equipment frame is designed with a height of 1.2 meters and a width of 62 cm. The total estimated cost of constructing this device is IDR 983,000. This design is expected to serve as an eco-friendly solution for managing oil palm leaf waste while providing a sustainable source of renewable energy.
