Abstract
As a producer of oil and natural gas, Indonesia faces declining production due to deteriorating reservoir performance and limited discovery of new reserves, making advanced methods such as Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) essential to boost oil recovery. One promising EOR method is chemical injection using water-based polymers (HPAM and Xanthan Gum) and oil-based polymers (PAO and PIB), which can improve sweep efficiency in sandstone reservoirs. This study aims to identify factors influencing polymer injection efficiency, assess effectiveness through 3D simulation modeling using CMG software, and compare the performance of each polymer type. Conducted in Field X located in the North Sea with sandstone reservoir characteristics, the reservoir model was validated through history matching, yielding a baseline recovery of 53%, closely matching actual data (52.96%) within a ±5% error margin. Injection simulations for 2005–2010, using CMG-GEM for water-based polymers and WinProp for oil-based polymers, showed that polymer type is the main factor affecting efficiency: HPAM achieved the highest recovery (66.7%), followed by PIB (66.6%), Xanthan Gum (66.3%), and PAO (65.5%). Water-based polymers exhibited slower production responses (around 2008) due to propagation time but resulted in higher and more stable final recoveries, while oil-based polymers showed faster early responses with more limited recovery gains. The study concludes that polymer injection efficiency depends not only on polymer type but also on production response time and reservoir wettability characteristics, highlighting the importance of selecting the appropriate polymer to significantly enhance recovery in heterogeneous sandstone reservoirs.
