Abstract
he formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) scale in oil and gas production pipeline systems can hinder fluid flow and reduce operational efficiency. The use of synthetic inhibitors such as EDTA 2Na has been proven effective but raises concerns regarding environmental impact. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of guava leaf (Psidium guajava) extract as a natural inhibitor in reducing CaCO₃ scale and to compare it with EDTA 2Na as a conventional inhibitor. The variations in inhibitor volume used were 45 ml, 50 ml, and 55 ml, with immersion durations of 60, 120, and 180 minutes. The results showed that the highest effectiveness of guava leaf extract occurred at a volume of 45 ml and 60 minutes of immersion, with a scale reduction percentage of 19.84%. Meanwhile, EDTA 2Na achieved its highest effectiveness at a volume of 55 ml and 180 minutes, reaching a reduction of 68.88%. This comparison indicates that although EDTA 2Na is more efficient, guava leaf extract still holds potential as an environmentally friendly alternative inhibitor, especially for sustainable applications in the oil and gas industry. Further research is recommended to explore combinations of natural and synthetic inhibitors, as well as comparisons with other substances such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and organic acids as safer and more effective scale control alternatives.
