Abstract

In drilling activities, drilling mud is one of the important parameters that can influence the success of the drilling operation. The issue of ineffective cutting removal and the loss of drilling fluid into the formation is an important matter to evaluate in order to improve the efficiency of wellbore cleaning. Therefore, the rheological properties of the drilling fluid must be frequently monitored during the drilling process to avoid problems related to changes in physical properties. One of the fundamental problems with this drilling mud is, of course, the deficiency that can be characterized as a partial or complete lack of drilling fluid entering the formation during the penetration system. In this study, rice husk was used with variations in concentration between 5 and 15 grams. The results showed that the addition of rice husk increased the plastic viscosity from 1 to 5 cP and the gel strength from 0.5 to 3 lb/100 ft², indicating that the mud has the ability to maintain suspension stability when circulation stops. On the other hand, the yield point decreased from 3 to –1 lb/100 ft², indicating that the mud does not have the carrying capacity against particles. Density increased slightly from 8.7 to 8.9 ppg. Additionally, the filtration loss decreased significantly, dropping from 185 milliliters to 164 milliliters. This indicates that the filtration properties of the mud have improved. Reducing the testing time from 188 seconds to 75 seconds. In general, rice husks can be used as a natural additive to improve drilling mud performance. This is particularly useful for controlling filtration and the static stability of the mud
