Abstract

Scale is a common problem in the oil industry that occurs in piping systems, such as flow lines and production lines. Scale is formed from crystallized and accumulated formation water, influenced by certain ionic chemical compounds produced with formation water during well production. Scale formation causes a decrease in pipe diameter and slows fluid flow, which can increase pressure and temperature in the pipe and cause pipe damage. Scale can be in the form of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). Organic inhibitors are the focus of research as a more environmentally friendly and affordable alternative. This study explores the use of areca nut extract as an organic inhibitor to analyze the effect of areca nut extract tannins on scale in oil and gas well tubing, with test results showing high scale reduction potential, but still requiring further research to obtain the optimum reduction value. Based on the results of the study, the content of Tannin acid in areca nut extract was found to be 24.75%. Areca nut extract showed a higher potential in reducing scale, with a maximum reduction reaching 1,5 % at a soaking time of 60 minutes and a volume of 75 ml. The longer the soaking time and the greater the volume of additive, the higher the percentage of scale reduction obtained. For areca nut seed extract, the best reduction occurred at 60 minutes. The extract showed consistent and increasing reduction results with increasing volume.
