Abstract

Infrastructure development in the area around the Batang Lubuh River, Babussalam Village, Rokan Hulu Regency, faces geotechnical challenges due to varying soil conditions and frequent landslides. To address this issue, a slope stability analysis and the construction of a retaining wall are required. This study aims to analyze the soil characteristics based on boring data and to calculate the safety factor (FS) of the slope using a numerical method based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) with PLAXIS 2D software. The data used are from field investigations using the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), which were then correlated to obtain technical soil parameters such as cohesion, internal friction angle, and elastic modulus. The slope model was constructed based on the actual excavated conditions without additional reinforcement. The upper soil layers, at depths of 0–5 meters, consist of soft clay and fine sand with low density and fluctuating SPT values, indicating poor stability. In contrast, the underlying marl layer, found at depths of 5–25 meters, has a high density and SPT values above 50, making it ideal as a foundation support layer. The analysis using PLAXIS 2D revealed that the maximum deformation of the slope was approximately 4 cm, and the calculated safety factor was 3.100, indicating a very stable slope condition. The results demonstrate that despite the weak surface layers, the presence of a strong sublayer significantly improves overall slope stability. In addition to providing a technical evaluation, this study shows the effectiveness of PLAXIS software in modeling and simulating geotechnical behavior with high accuracy. These findings can serve as a reference for similar slope reinforcement projects in complex soil conditions and as a valuable academic contribution to civil engineering.
