Abstract

The development of digital technology and social media has shaped new patterns of communication and participation, especially among digital native. This study aims to describe the forms of participation and the meaning of social media use by digital native in responding to social issues in digital spaces. This research uses a qualitative approach with five informants aged 15–34 years in Tembilahan, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results show that digital native actively use various social media platforms for entertainment, communication, education, and promotion. Informants also demonstrated engagement in responding to social issues such as immoral content, online fraud, fake investments, insults to public officials, and the case of ASN in Inhil Regency showing off money, which prompted the Acting Regional Secretary to urge responsible use of social media. However, this participation is also accompanied by challenges such as digital addiction and low ethical awareness in using media. This research recommends strengthening digital literacy and legal awareness among digital native.
